Water sport ahoy on Lake Salzgitter
Of course, you can 'just' swim in its waves, lie in the sun on the kilometres of sandy beach or jog along the surrounding paths. And it won't cost you a penny; there's no charge for using Lake Salzgitter.
Close by are indoor and open-air swimming baths, free leisure-time sports facilities, tennis courts, picnic grills - and an indoor ice rink. Cyclists, fishermen, divers and model-boat enthusiasts are all catered for. You can combine relaxation and movement by hiring a pedalo. The top attraction is a brand new water-ski course. Amateurs and professionals can be towed round and round for almost 800 metres at 50 kmph from May to September.
From autumn to spring the ice rink hosts ice hockey and figure skating. Curling, and skating for everyone, children and adults, takes place in a more relaxed atmosphere. Even in summer, when the ice has melted, there's no peace in the multi-functional facility, as then it's time for musical events for young and old or for fairs.
Salzgitter Lake's peaceful sanctuary is its island, where you can take a quiet stroll and view some of the town's collection of art in public areas. There are times when the island's air 'catches fire', as it's taken over by rock and pop musicians homing in on Open Air at Lake Salzgitter. Then up to 30.000 fans invade the island's southern tip.
