Salzgitter

The year 2015 in Salzgitter

New lakeside restaurant, objection campaign, fire department support association, Salzgittersee film: Salzgitter once again had a number of outstanding events in 2015.

The "Café del Lago" restaurant on Salzgittersee opened its doors in March, adding another attraction to the famous body of water.

The outdoor area consists of two large terraces with 160 seats. Inside, guests can enjoy a restaurant area with over 100 seats as well as an exclusive lounge and a cocktail bar. Guests are catered for from breakfast to dinner.

Also since March, there has been a support association for the children's and youth fire department of the city of Salzgitter. 50 founding members have signed the articles of association. In addition to private individuals, the founding members include various entrepreneurs as well as Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel. The association is chaired by Stefan Klein, Member of the State Parliament and Mayor of Salzgitter.

In September, the Elka department store reopened in Salzgitter-Lebenstedt's new retail center with a sales area of around 600 square meters. The investor is also currently considering further modernization work and the construction of new buildings in the city centre over the next few months.

In November, a tourist promotional film about Salzgittersee was published on the city of Salzgitter's YouTube channel. The film was produced in cooperation between the City of Salzgitter's tourism promotion department and the Nördlicher Harzvorland Tourismusverband e.V.. It is the first in a series of films about the northern Harz foreland.

Another new film on YouTube, which was posted in December, is a preview of the Kultursommer from August 5 to 26, 2016, when Roland Kaiser, Dieter Thomas Kuhn, The Baseballs and The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, among others, will perform in front of Salder Castle.

Keyword digital media: The city of Salzgitter has also been on the digital network Facebook since May. There are also pages on Twitter and Google+. The latest news from the city is published on Google News.

One very important topic, not only for Salzgitter but for the entire region, was topical throughout 2015: the Konrad mine. Highlights included an objection campaign with 70,000 signatures, which (probably) averted the impending option from Berlin to double the amount of waste to be stored in Konrad.

In December, many local authorities in the region adopted a joint appeal to demand, among other things, a reassessment of the "Schacht Konrad" project according to the current state of science and technology. From a scientific (and human) point of view, this reassessment can only lead to the conclusion that the Konrad mine is not suitable as a storage site.
