For years, the multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer worked as a sought-after sideman on saxophone and flute—both live and in the studio—for established heavyweights in the music scene such as Randy Crawford, Phil Collins, Mousse T., Jazzkantine, Bahama Soul Club, and Spice. At the same time, he worked on his own projects, such as the German-African project “Culture Clan,” with which he scored a No. 1 hit in South Africa and received an award.
Prompted by the pandemic, YORK is now bringing his passion for jazz and soul to life with the album “The SoulJazz Experience.” With interludes and samples evoking the flair of 1960s film scores, he draws a connection to his work in theater and film and reveals his secret love for DJing through his scratching. His many years of experience on stage, as well as his involvement in over 100 CD productions, give him a natural-seeming confidence. The constant balance between musical precision and the courage to embrace analog imperfections is impressive. YORK clearly relishes his newfound creative freedom—both as a composer, arranger, and producer, and, of course, as a performing musician! And now with an outstanding live band!
