In lessons, special emphasis is placed on activity-based forms of learning. The Hauptschule strengthens basic skills, work attitudes, elementary cultural techniques and independent learning. In accordance with their abilities and inclinations, the Hauptschule enables pupils to focus on their individual interests, particularly in the area of vocational orientation, and enables them to continue their education in accordance with their qualifications, primarily in a vocational but also in a study-related way.

Lessons in the Hauptschule consist of compulsory lessons, compulsory elective lessons and optional lessons. English is taught as the first foreign language. From the 9th grade onwards, specialist courses in English and mathematics are set up in two course levels (A and B).

A special focus is placed on strengthening vocational orientation. To this end, the Hauptschule provides practical experience in companies, in work-related lessons and, if necessary, in practical training at vocational schools, which serve to ensure the ability to train in a comprehensive sense.

The objectives, content and methods for teaching in the Hauptschule are determined by the decree "Die Arbeit in der Hauptschule" (Work in the Hauptschule) of 21.05.2017 as well as by subject-related framework guidelines and curricular requirements.

At the end of the 9th school year, the Hauptschulabschluss can be obtained at the Hauptschule; at the end of the 10th school year, the following qualifications can be obtained

• Extended secondary school leaving certificate I, which, among other things, entitles students to enter the introductory phase of the upper secondary school (10th grade) or to attend a specialized grammar school,

• Secondary school leaving certificate I - Realschulabschluss,

• Secondary school leaving certificate I - Hauptschulabschluss.
