We for you: The voice of the youth

Salzgitter has had a youth parliament since 2014, which is involved in many ways on behalf of children and young people in the city. "We are committed to ensuring that our opinions and views are taken into account when projects are implemented and developed."

Current: Candidates wanted for the new youth parliament

Anyone who would like to get involved on behalf of children and young people in Salzgitter can now apply as a candidate for the new youth parliament. The application deadline is March 2, 2026, at 6 pm.

After that, around 10,000 young people will be called upon to elect 25 parliamentarians and three assessors to the Youth Parliament on Friday, April 10, 2026. Young people aged between 12 and 20 can stand for election and cast their vote.

But first of all, young people have to register as candidates and put themselves forward by Monday, March 2.

How does that work?

with a photo and declaration of consent as well as ten supporting signatures. The candidacy form is now available to download from the City of Salzgitter website (www.salzgitter.de, enter the keyword Youth Parliament). It can also be obtained from the school office, the school social workers and the children's and youth clubs.

Applications must be submitted to the City of Salzgitter (Joachim-Campe-Straße 6-8, 38226 Salzgitter or Joachim-Campe-Straße 9-11, 38226 Salzgitter) by 6 p.m. (postmark) on March 2, 2026.

Who can stand as a candidate?

All candidates must have had their main residence in Salzgitter for at least one month on election day (i.e. from March 10).

Young people from the age of 14 up to and including the age of 20 can stand as youth parliamentarians.

Anyone between the ages of 12 and 13 can apply to be an assessor. There are 3 places available for assessors, who have the same right to vote, speak and propose motions as the youth parliamentarians.

The youth parliament meets several times a year (approx. eight to eleven times). The young people have the opportunity to discuss their own ideas for Salzgitter or to find a common position on proposals from the city council. Ideas and demands from children and young people who are not members of the Youth Parliament are also discussed. If the members of the youth parliament think an idea is good or an issue is important, they either turn it into a project of their own or try to get the city administration or the city council to do something about the idea. The members meet in small groups to consider, discuss and implement such projects. All children and young people from Salzgitter who are not members of the youth parliament but are interested in the topic can also take part in these meetings.

Anyone who has questions about the application or the work of the Youth Parliament can also contact the Children, Youth and Family Department on 05341 / 839-3803 and 05341 / 839-3991 or by email at jugendparlamentstadt.salzgitterde.

The youth parliament meets on March 19

On Thursday, March 19, the youth parliament will meet at 6 p.m. in the council chamber of the town hall in Lebenstedt (Joachim-Campe-Straße 6-8). Guests are welcome!

Young people get involved for young people.

18 members of parliament meet regularly in the council chamber in the town hall. "These meetings are open to the public, so you can attend them at any time if you are interested in a particular topic. We then deal with the city's current issues or work on our own projects."

In the last fifth session, these included the "Climate Run", the "Youth Politics Days" and leisure activities for children and young people in the city.

In addition, those involved in previous youth parliaments have taken part in the working group for the development of Salzgittersee, organized surveys on specific topics such as canteen meals at schools or put on a summer party for a good cause.

The young people in the youth parliament pass resolutions, express wishes and take initiatives, which are then discussed in the city's political bodies such as the council.

"We can convey our interests to the city's decision-making bodies and actively shape them. We are asked for our opinion. Our voice is important and is heard."

Since 2014, the youth parliament has represented the interests of young people and enriched the activities of the city of Salzgitter for children and young people.

That's why the committed members are happy to hear from other interested parties who simply drop by, call, email or get in touch via digital channels. Simply join in and get involved!
