Climate protection in Salzgitter

Welcome to climate protection in Salzgitter! On these pages you can find out how the city is committed to climate protection.

News: Distribution of the acceptance fee

On April 19, 2024, the Lower Saxony Act on the Participation of Municipalities and the Population in the Economic Surplus of Wind Energy and Photovoltaic Systems (NWindPVBetG) came into force. The aim of the NWindPVBetG is to maintain and increase public acceptance of wind turbines and ground-mounted systems.

At its meeting on October 29, 2025, the Salzgitter City Council unanimously adopted the guideline on the distribution of the acceptance levy in accordance with Section 4 NWindPVBetG and the grants in accordance with Section 6 EEG. It had previously been discussed in all local councils as well as in the Environmental and Climate Protection Committee and the Administrative Committee (see draft resolution 3928/18).

In 2013, the city of Salzgitter had an integrated climate protection concept drawn up. This concept included extensive analyses of the current state of the city. These included energy consumption, the energy status of residential buildings and balances for trade and industry. The analyses extend to scenarios and potentials as to how much the energy demand could be reduced. The scenarios aim to improve the quality of life, as climate protection has little to do with doing without, but much more to do with "decluttering" everyday life and elegant use of available resources.

The concept recommends measures that can be implemented to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A climate protection manager was hired for this purpose in October 2015. The climate protection manager organizes the implementation of measures, networks the city with other municipalities and climate protection managers in the area and adapts the concept to ongoing developments.
