Salzgitter

The renaturation of the Schölke

The Greater Braunschweig Regional Association and the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation are funding the nature project "Renaturation of the Schölke in Lebenstedt City Park and open space design" with around 1.1 million euros.

The city park has a stock of trees worthy of protection and large areas of lawn.

On 1 April 2025, the City Council of Salzgitter commissioned the administration to implement the opening and near-natural watercourse design with accompanying open space design of the Schölke in the Lebenstedt city park area as part of the pilot project "water-sensitive urban development of the regional centers of Braunschweig, Salzgitter and Wolfsburg" by the Blue-Green Association of Cities in cooperation with the RGB (Regional Association of Greater Braunschweig).

The environment department of the city of Salzgitter had already had an action plan and plan of measures drawn up for the Schölke.

The overview plan

Current situation of the Schölke:

Alongside the Fuhse and the Krähenriede, the Schölke is a 2nd order watercourse that characterizes the Lebenstedt urban area.

In the area between Swindonstraße and Kattowitzer Straße in Lebenstedt, the Schölke runs for around 1.7 kilometers, 700 meters of which are completely culverted and are therefore classified as "completely modified" (2020 action plan with action plan).

The section in the area of the Stadtpark is already identified in the 2020 action plan as an area preferably suitable for the implementation of measures from an expert's point of view.

Reason for piping the Fuhse in this area

The piping was installed between 1950 and 1955 due to a lack of water and poor hygienic conditions caused by the unregulated discharge of wastewater. The city park was also created during this period.
