At the head of the protest march: Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel, Björn Harmening (IG Metall), Ulrich Löhr (Landvolk Braunschweiger Land) and Maria Dima from the youth parliament. They also spoke at the subsequent rally.
The German government has recently admitted that "twice as much nuclear waste needs to be stored". In addition, waste from the Asse mine is also to be relocated to Konrad.
"The resistance of the people in the region will never end," promised Klingebiel, addressing the federal government directly. Those responsible in Berlin must come to their senses and question Konrad as a whole. "Because Konrad was explored as a nuclear waste repository using outdated technology," Löhr emphasized.
At the end of November, the council and the mayor of Salzgitter unanimously passed a resolution protesting against this outrageous approach from Berlin.
The resolution also states that, according to the current state of science and technology, the Konrad mine would be ruled out as a storage site for nuclear waste from the outset, as Konrad (a former extraction mine) is located in a water-bearing layer and is not designed to be retrievable.
