Interested parties can experience the event live from 3 p.m. in front of the Kulturscheune. From 2.30 p.m., the "Konrad stoppen - statt erweitern" ("Stop Konrad - instead of expanding") campaign alliance will be protesting in front of the event building against Schacht Konrad as the only German repository for low and intermediate-level radioactive waste to date.
Citizens are invited to make it clear to the Federal Minister with their protest that the population is against the storage of nuclear waste under the conditions planned by the Federal Ministry in the Konrad mine.
More than 70,000 signatures, which were handed over to the Berlin Ministry in May 2015, show the extent of the resistance in the region to the planned storage.
In addition, the region is protesting against the planned storage with the "Appeal of the Region", which has now been signed by the councils of the independent cities of Braunschweig, Wolfsburg and Salzgitter, the district councils of the districts of Goslar, Peine, Wolfenbüttel and Helmstedt and the councils of 12 towns, municipalities and joint municipalities belonging to the district.
Further resolutions are still expected. Among other things, the Federal Government is being asked to permanently rule out any expansion of the Konrad mine and to carry out a comprehensive reassessment of the mine in line with the current state of science and technology.
During her visit, the Federal Environment Minister will inform herself about the situation and the state of resistance in the region and discuss it with Mayor Frank Klingebiel and representatives of the action alliance, the councillors of the city of Salzgitter and representatives of the region (main administrative officials of the region, members of the Bundestag and state parliament).
Among those who have confirmed their attendance so far are members of the German Bundestag: Günter Lach (CDU), Pia Zimmermann (Die Linke), Ingrid Pahlmann (CDU), Jutta Krellmann (Die Linke), Hubertus Zdebel (Die Linke); members of the Lower Saxony state parliament Marcus Bosse (SPD), Stefan Klein (SPD), Ottmar von Holtz (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen), Miriam Staudte (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen) as well as the main administrative officials of the region (including Ulrich Markurth, Lord Mayor of the City of Braunschweig; Klaus Dieter Mohrs, Lord Mayor of Wolfsburg; Thomas Pink, Mayor of Wolfenbüttel; Christiana Steinbrügge, District Administrator of Wolfenbüttel; Thomas Brych, District Administrator of Goslar and Franz Einhaus, District Administrator of Peine.
In the next few days, the appeal of the region, a map of the participating municipalities and a film about the event in the Kulturscheune will also be available on the Salzgitter city website.
