Salzgitter

Perspective 2020

"We still have big plans," said Michael Tacke, City Councillor for Building, Urban Planning, Urban Development and the Environment. The South Local Council has approved the update of the integrated action plan for the east and west estates.

Work has begun on the former Hotel Jost. The next projects in the eastern and western estates were presented by (from left): Michael Tacke, City Councillor for Building, Urban Planning, Urban Development and the Environment, Diana Graf from the city office; Susanne Goronzi, Head of the Urban Redevelopment and Social City Department and Markus Meyer from the city office.

This created the basis for the implementation of further projects in the redevelopment area. These include the relocation of the city office to the Noah-Gemeinde, the demolition of the former Hotel Josts with a new occupancy of the space and the construction of a new daycare center, for which a location is still being sought.

Since 2004, the eastern and western estates have been supported by the federal and state "Socially Integrative City" program (one third by the federal government, one third by the state and one third by the local authority), which is set to run for around 15 years. So far, 4.9 million euros in investment measures have been implemented. In addition, there are non-investment measures such as strengthening youth in the neighborhood.

Since then, many larger and smaller projects have been created, such as the Roxy-Helco playground, the NOW neighborhood meeting place and the neighborhood park at the Ziesberg school. In addition, a lot has been achieved in collaboration with cooperation partners and renovation and maintenance measures have been implemented together with private owners.

"The Socially Integrative City urban development programme is a very important funding instrument because these projects would not be financially viable for the city without urban development funding," emphasized Michael Tacke. The upgrading of the estate resulted in an influx of many families with children. The former vacancy rate of 70 percent no longer exists. On the contrary: the Ost- und Westsiedlung is a lively neighborhood in which around 750 residents have moved in since 2015 and a lot is being done for and with the people. The relocation of the city office to the Noah community center is positive. The door is always open and the district managers Diana Graf and Markus Meyer get to talk to lots of people. "We are the local caretakers," emphasized Diana Graf. The room is also used for meetings and discussions by the daycare center or residents. Many people in the estate get involved and take part in activities such as the health weeks or the NOW district festival. "People wanted to help make the estate more attractive," said Susanne Goronzi, Head of the Urban Redevelopment and Socially Integrative City Department.

The associated need for daycare places, for example, has been taken into account in the integrated action plan. The new projects added compared to the 2014 - 2017 update of the action plan are: the redevelopment of Helenenstraße (former Hotel Jost) and the construction of a new daycare facility. In addition, measures for the design of leisure areas in the vicinity of the secondary school in Salzgitter-Bad, branch on Helenenstrasse, and the Dr. Klaus Schmidt secondary school were added.
