Salzgitter

Design for a possible lake promenade

In October last year, the Salzgitter City Council commissioned the administration to draw up draft plans for the construction of a lakeside promenade.

This does not yet constitute a decision on the construction of the promenade. This requires a majority in the Salzgitter City Council. On September 18, city planning officer Michael Tacke and Frank Guder from the engineering firm Guder-Jung-Hämmerli presented these designs at a press conference. The main aim of building a lakeside promenade is to significantly increase the attractiveness of the eastern shore of the lake and thus improve the quality of stay for visitors.

The engineering firm's design plans envisage an approximately 600-metre-long promenade between the swimming pool in the south and the DLRG in the north. The footpath and cycle path are to be realized separately. A central square is planned in the south where visitors can reach the shore via several steps. A small artificial bay is to be created to the north of this, at the level of the DLRG. A beach area of around 500 square meters is planned upstream, which will be connected to the promenade path via a 40-meter-long bridge.

The implementation of this draft is still unclear. A council decision is required for this. According to current calculations, the construction costs for the design presented would amount to around 2.23 million euros. In addition to the EUR 1.40 million already planned, the financing of the additional costs of around EUR 800,000 is still unclear. A financing decision for the project will also be made by the Salzgitter City Council.

"Discussions will also be held with the local clubs before construction can begin," emphasized city planning officer Michael Tacke. He went on to say: "The rowing course, for example, should not be curtailed by the project."
