Salzgitter turned 75 years young on April 1. Members of the 17th electoral term of the city council, honorary council members, city medal holders and the administrative management of the city of Salzgitter celebrated the 75th birthday together with personalities from the city's history and Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel at the end of March in anticipation of the actual anniversary with a ceremony in the Kulturscheune in Salzgitter-Lebenstedt.
The Lord Mayor invited the honorary citizens Hermann Struck and Rudolf Rückert, the former Lord Mayor Dr. Hendrik Gröttrup and Detlef Engster as well as former Lord Mayor Helmut Knebel to an exciting and entertaining panel discussion as contemporary witnesses of the city's recent history.
Since the end of June, Albert-Schweitzer-Straße has been open to traffic again. The lanes were reduced between Konrad-Adenauer-Straße and Joachim-Campe-Straße because the traffic was to be taken out of the city center. Instead, there are now larger areas for pedestrians and cyclists. A key design feature is the wide sidewalks on both sides of the street and spacious recreational areas on the southwest side.
The expansion of Albert-Schweitzer-Straße is an important element of the "City Center Urban Development Framework Plan" adopted by the council. "The new bus station, the city center development with the new stores, the planned hotel and the new service station at the train station planned for the autumn will further enhance the cityscape.
In November 2017, civil engineering work began on a four-star hotel in the center of Salzgitter-Lebenstedt. The conference and accommodation hotel is due to open in 2019. A hotel chain is building the hotel with investor and developer Helmut de Jong between Blumentriften and Chemnitzer Straße, on the site where Elka and Commerzbank used to be based.
After a construction period of around 15 months, the hotel with 120 rooms, a restaurant, fitness and wellness area and a spacious 300 square meter conference area will be completed. The other stores and the entire city center will also benefit from the new hotel. Even more visitors from the surrounding area than usual will use it to shop and linger alongside Salzgitter residents.
The modernization and expansion of the Stadtbad am Salzgittersee is continuing at full speed. From mid-2019, the entire new Stadtbad with around 1000 square meters of water surface will be available for use. The concept is divided into two construction phases.
In the first phase, a new barrier-free indoor swimming pool will be built by May 2018. This will be followed by the renovation of the existing indoor pool in the second construction phase. Due to the extensive modernization and conversion work, the outdoor pool located right next door will not be open until 2018. According to Bäder, Sport und Freizeit GmbH (BSF), it is also not certain what will happen to the old pools (from the 1960s). A decision on renovation/new construction is still pending.
Max Giesinger concerts are sold out, but on August 10, fans of the singer were also able to enjoy an open-air concert in Salzgitter in front of Salder Castle. He took to the stage in the impressive castle courtyard as part of the Kultursommer festival.
The next Kultursommer at the castle starts in August 2018. Maria Voskania & guest star, Jethro Tull, Nina Hagen and Gentleman, among others, will then perform at the 2018 Kultursommer at Salder Castle in Salzgitter. There will also be a big name in the pop music business, who will be released in February.
