People also use the nature reserve for leisure activities, such as fishing and canoeing. The Lower Nature Conservation Authority in the district of Wolfenbüttel will be holding a public event on March 12 from 5:30 p.m. in the main meeting room to provide information on the upcoming plans for the nature reserve. Together with the lower nature conservation authorities of the districts of Goslar and Hildesheim as well as the city of Salzgitter and the planning office UIH from Höxter, a management plan for the nature reserve is to be drawn up by the end of 2019.

The districts concerned and the city of Salzgitter must ensure that these EU-protected habitats, plants and animal species continue to develop well and are preserved for future generations. The interests of animals, the environment and humans must be brought together. After all, people also have legitimate demands on this special habitat in our region: flood protection and water maintenance are necessary, but also shape the landscape along the Innersten. Canoeists, anglers, horse riders and walkers share the river and the adjacent forests and meadows with sometimes very rare plants and breeding bird species that are prone to disturbance, such as the red-breasted merganser.

How can nature conservation work in this area of conflict? Where do synergies arise? What does Natura 2000, an interconnected network of protected areas within the European Union, have to do with it?
