The region's main administrative officials today issued an open letter to promote a peaceful and open society.
"Especially in these politically difficult times, we need a debate across society about the responsibility of each individual for democracy and social cohesion and a clear commitment to the fundamental values of our society," the signatories agreed.
The open letter continues: "Our democracy and the associated values of the Basic Law are the most important achievements of the Federal Republic of Germany. They must be strengthened and - where necessary - defended."
