Mayor Frank Klingebiel emphasized the special importance of this voluntary task and said: "Because you, dear Ortsheimatpfleger, are the historical memory and living encyclopaedia of our city."

Michael von Barany and Christian Kempe (both for Osterlinde) were appointed as Ortsheimatpfleger for the first time. All other Ortsheimatpfleger were already active in this honorary position. The 32 Ortsheimatpfleger were appointed by the city council until 2022. The council has yet to appoint a Ortsheimatpfleger for Lobmachtersen. The previous Ortsheimatpfleger, Peter Stübig, passed away on 6 December 2018. A minute's silence was held in his honour at the event. Mayor Klingebiel paid tribute to his great services to local history and his commitment to preserving the water tower in Lobmachtersen.

The four-year term of office of the Ortsheimatpfleger of the city of Salzgitter ended on December 31, 2018. The appointment procedure stipulates that the local council nominates suitable people who are then appointed by the city council. The honorary position of Ortsheimatpfleger has existed in Salzgitter since 1987. Since then, Norbert Zachries for Lesse and Hartmut Alder for Thiede have been active in this function and have been appointed by the Salzgitter City Council for a further four years.
