Kniestedt high altar in Salder Castle

The Museum of the City of Salzgitter, Salder Castle, can present another historical "gem" in its exhibition rooms.

The high altar is presented by the Förderkreis and Fachdienst Kultur.

Thanks to the Förderkreis Schloss Salder, a high altar from the 17th century has been restored for around 23,000 euros. It originally stood in the Kniestedt church until 1983/84 and then on loan to the Lesser church until around 1998, when it was moved to the museum.

It was there that the Förderkreis came up with the idea of having it restored. This was then unanimously approved at the 2017 general meeting. The work on the high altar was carried out by Janka Schröder, a qualified restorer of furniture and wooden objects, until the end of 2018. It was then set up.

On Tuesday, February 12, the restored object was officially handed over to the city. Dr. Rolf Teusch, Dr. Jörg Leuschner, Otto Schanderl and Dr. Joachim Meier-Grotrian from the Förderkreis and Hartmut Schölch and Renate Vanis from the Fachdienst Kultur, as well as the restorer, were present.

The high altar is now on display in the medieval exhibition at Salder Castle.

Admission to the Salder Castle Museum is free of charge. The exhibitions focus on providing information about the history of the entire Salzgitter region from the history of the earth to the present day. In addition to the permanent exhibitions, a large number of temporary and special exhibitions contribute to a lively museum life.
