The village, first mentioned in 1161, developed around the church under the protection of the castle of the Lords of Salder, the "small court". Construction of the castle began in 1608 under the ownership of David Sachse, a princely Brunswick colonel and privy councillor.
It was acquired by Hereditary Prince August Wilhelm in 1695. After 1866/1867, Salder Castle was used exclusively for agricultural purposes. The castle was owned by the state of Brunswick after 1918 and was managed by Braunschweig GmbH from 1925, which sold it to the Reichswerke in 1939.
In 1955 it became the property of the town of Salzgitter. The municipal museum has been open to visitors in the castle rooms since 1962. By the way: admission to the museum is free of charge.
