Internationally, the day is known as "Public Service Day" and is proclaimed by the United Nations. On this day, municipal companies throughout Germany showcase their services of general interest.
In Salzgitter, around 300 SRB employees are on duty every day. Almost 33,000 tons of waste are collected in the city and disposed of by the waste collection vehicles. The type of waste ranges from residual and organic waste, packaging and waste paper to bulky waste.
The refuse collectors have emptied the residual waste and organic waste garbage cans in Salzgitter almost 639,000 times a year. The Diebesstieg waste disposal facility was also very busy. The number of small deliveries has risen continuously in recent years and currently stands at almost 130,000 deliveries per year.
Every year, the men and women of the SRB clean almost 420,000 sweeping meters of road, maintain 5.4 million square meters of green spaces, check 23,000 trees, 60 hectares of forest and carry out road maintenance on 580 kilometers. 223 playgrounds with over 1544 pieces of play equipment are looked after and checked for safety by the municipal company.
"With our depots, we take care of basic services. We make sure that people can move around safely on the streets and in the parks," says Dietrich Leptien, Operations Manager at the municipal operations company. The SRB is breaking new ground by generating energy from the photovoltaic system at the Diebesstieg landfill site and maintaining a fleet of electric vehicles for climate-friendly mobility - a valuable contribution to public services.
SRB Salzgitter trains young people to become road maintenance workers, vehicle mechatronics technicians and gardeners. "The young trainees acquire both theoretical and practical know-how with us so that they are optimally equipped for their professional future after their training," says Frank Kalberlah, trainer in green maintenance. SRB is even a certified TOP training company for landscape gardeners. There is a job guarantee for all trainees who pass their exams: all trained young employees are taken on.
