Salzgitter

Successful pilot project for tolerance

In the 2018/2019 school year, a pilot project entitled "ToleranSZ" took place at Gymnasium am Fredenberg in Lebenstedt on the topics of "Promoting democracy", "Anti-discrimination" and "Preventing racism".

It should promote tolerance among pupils, parents and teachers, create an understanding of democracy, prevent discrimination and combat racism.

It was a joint project between the city of Salzgitter, the Workers' Welfare Association (AWO) and the Gymnasium am Fredenberg. The school was specifically chosen because it has a very diverse student body and is located in a neighborhood inhabited by people with roots in a wide variety of countries.

As part of the project, pupils from a working group (AG) at the grammar school had created a banner that was intended to express their own ideas on basic democratic values such as tolerance, diversity and cultural openness in an artistic way. The banner has now been hung on the bridge over Kurt-Schumacher-Ring in Fredenberg to show that values such as tolerance are a fundamental part of our dealings with one another.

Other focal points of the project were various excursions, such as "Democracy and tolerance in Berlin - past and present" as well as author readings and a teacher training course on "Prevention and right-wing extremism". The AWO and AWiSTA staff also involved the parents in their work.

In the end, the pupils and parents put on a joint play under the guidance of the Theaterpädagogisches Zentrum Hildesheim (TPZ), which was performed in public at the grammar school.

The concept of the pilot project has also convinced other schools. In the meantime, the city administration has also been able to get the elementary school and the Hauptschule am Fredenberg interested in the project. The two schools will also implement it in the first half of the 2019/2020 school year. The funding decisions have already been approved by the State Office for Social Affairs, Youth and Family. The elementary school will receive 37,000 euros and the secondary school 27,000 euros.
