Salzgitter

The year 2019 in Salzgitter

New Stadtbad, St. Elisabeth Hospital, Kulturentwicklungsplan, Kultursommer, lake lighting, further development of Salzgittersee, digital media: Salzgitter once again had a number of outstanding events in 2019.

The lake lighting at Salzgittersee was ceremonially switched on at the beginning of December. Mayor Frank Klingebiel performed the ceremony together with Mayor Stefan Klein, local mayor Werner Müller and other representatives of the council and local councils.

The inner ring road around Salzgittersee is now illuminated with LED lights on aluminum poles over a length of 5,400 meters. On site, Klingebiel emphasized: "The lighting increases the attractiveness of Salzgittersee. We are all happy when we can go for a walk or jog here even in the dark season."

The results of the extensive public participation process for the further development of Salzgittersee were presented at a public meeting back in September. The core results are: the great importance of nature and recreation and thus also the protection of the natural character of the lake and its surroundings. Furthermore, the maintenance and expansion of public paths and the improvement of cleanliness and the safeguarding and expansion of sports and leisure facilities. In addition, the addition of catering facilities and meeting places.

The sports and family pool at Salzgittersee was inaugurated in glorious sunshine at the end of October with an open day. The project was implemented by the municipal Bäder, Sport und Freizeit Salzgitter GmbH.

One particular challenge was combining the new building, which was completed in May 2018, with the leisure and toddler area and the existing indoor swimming pool from the 1960s, which was extensively renovated in the second construction phase. The new features here include four large collective changing rooms for schools and clubs with sanitary facilities, the renovated pool surround, the new ceiling and lighting.

The Kulturentwicklungsplan of the city of Salzgitter has been completed. It was adopted by the city council at the end of November. The measures suggested in the plan will now be implemented as required with the participation of the various cultural institutions, those involved in the Kulturentwicklungsplan process and the public in suitable formats. The basis for the plan was an inventory, which included an extensive participation process.

In August, the Kultursommer in front of Salder Castle once again offered a diverse program for young and old. Bob Geldof and Klaus Doldinger, among others, took to the stage in the impressive castle courtyard. The next Kultursommer starts in August 2020. Stahlzeit, Jethro Tull, Corvus Corax and Spark, among others, will then perform.

The Salder Castle Municipal Museum was recognized by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Culture as an "extracurricular learning location" in the "Geopark Harz.Braunschweiger Land.Ostfalen" in November.

In February, the museum applied with its Eiszeitgarten and learning workshop together with the Geopark information center "Findlingsgarten und Erlebnissteinbrüche" near Königslutter am Elm and the "Staatliches Naturhistorisches Museum Braunschweig" with the geopoint "Jurameer Schandelah". The museum's educational program at the castle aims to present and illustrate not only cultural and historical contexts but also artistic, technical and scientific knowledge.

Demolition is the starting signal: In February, the last building on the St. Elisabeth Hospital site in Salzgitter-Bad, which had been unused for a long time, had to make way. In June 2018, St. Elisabeth Hospital received funding approval from the state of Lower Saxony for a new replacement building.

The construction site was cleared and the long-awaited new hospital construction project in the south of the city, which had been fought for with great perseverance, could go ahead. The "old" hospital will continue to operate until completion.

Finally, the digital media, which are being used more and more these days to research information for themselves and deal more intensively with certain topics. The city of Salzgitter also makes use of these digital opportunities, a great success story with steadily increasing user numbers.
