Changes to the ID card from January

The BürgerCenter informs: The fee for an ID card will be adjusted nationwide from 2021.

The fee for an ID card will increase from January 1, 2021

From January 1, 2021, the fee will be 37.00 euros for applicants who have reached the age of 24.

The period of validity remains 10 years as before. In return, there will no longer be any additional costs for subsequent activation of the online functions or unblocking the electronic proof of identity. Previously, a fee of 6.00 euros was charged for each of these.

The fee for a person who is not yet 24 years old at the time of application is 22.80 euros and the fee for the provisional ID card remains the same at 10 euros.

To apply for a new ID card, you must always appear in person at the two Citizens' Centers in Lebenstedt and Salzgitter-Bad. A current, biometric photo and the previous ID card must be brought along.

An appointment can be booked online at one of the two Citizens' Centers on the Salzgitter city website.

New eID card for EU citizens

On January 1, 2021, the eID card will be introduced for EU citizens. The "eID card" is the abbreviation for "card with electronic proof of identity function."

Citizens of a member state of the European Union and nationals of the European Economic Area (Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein) can use it to access the online ID function.

This function is currently only available to German citizens with an ID card and foreign nationals who are subject to the German Residence Act (with an electronic residence permit).

The eID card is not an ID card and therefore not a mandatory document for fulfilling the identification requirement. There are no plans to include a photograph on the eID card.

The card can be applied for at one of the two Citizens' Centers for a fee of 37.00 euros. A recognized and valid foreign passport or identity card must be presented so that personal identification is possible.
