Tree felling work in Hagenholz

The municipal management company (SRB) of the city of Salzgitter has announced that a large number of trees will soon have to be felled in Hagenholz in Thiede.

The trees are currently being examined by experts on site. All trees that are marked must be removed due to the duty to maintain public safety. They have died or are in the process of dying due to the extreme drought in recent years. The south-facing locations are particularly affected.

These trees pose a danger to visitors and neighboring buildings, as dead branches can break off or entire trees can fall over unpredictably. The safety of this important recreational forest, especially in the area of the paved circular paths and the adjacent buildings, makes felling essential. Unfortunately, due to the age and previous damage to the existing forest stand, it must be assumed that more trees will die. In addition, typical forest hazards are always to be expected, especially away from the paved paths.

The necessary work will be carried out by a specialist company and is expected to begin in the seventh calendar week and then last for several days. During this time, access to the forest will be restricted. The barriers set up in parts of the forest must be observed at all times.

The Hagenholz will be managed in accordance with the legal requirements of the Federal and State Forest Act. The primary aim is to maintain and develop the forest in a healthy and stable condition in the long term as a habitat for species-rich flora and fauna. This is ensured by the responsible authorities, the Niedersächsische Landesforsten (Liebenburg Forestry Office) and the SRB. In addition, the entire municipal forest has been certified in accordance with the PEFC forest certification system since 2003. It is therefore subject to independent monitoring of the current standards of ecological, economic and social sustainability.
