Music school enables lessons via video conference

Unusual times call for creative measures. The Salzgitter music school's answer to the closed rooms is "online lessons via video conference".

Sabine Petter, head of the music school, teaches Hannah Wittenberg.

Since March 14, music school lessons can no longer take place in its rooms. However, the music school team has quickly found other ways to offer some of its subjects.

Many of the teachers offer lessons via video chat, email, video tutorial, telephone or a combination of several of these components. Pupils now come together with their teachers via video and audio on their smartphones or laptops during their usual lesson time. Teachers can both hear and see their students and pay attention to their movements and hand and body posture. For example, the correct working of notes, tempo or fingerings is taught. Making music together and working on the sound are then followed up when the music school reopens.

Around 70 to 80 percent of instrumental students have taken advantage of this offer so far. Parents support their children and approve of the music school's offer. And the pupils are pleased that lessons are continuing despite the school closure.

Due to the current situation, group lessons cannot take place at the moment. However, the music school's jazz and pop choir "Gentle Voices" has found a creative solution: director Britta Rex has already held two rehearsals online via video chat. The 25 singers sat alone at home on their computers or tablets and met in a virtual room. Everyone sang along to a warm-up video and played a quiz about the choir's repertoire. In the near future, the singers will receive audio tracks for practicing. The choir is also planning a virtual video project for next month, which will then be published. The time can also be used to focus on music theory topics, as these can be communicated very well in a video conference.

Whether choir or individual students: everyone hopes that real lessons will soon resume in the music school's rooms in Lebenstedt, Salzgitter-Bad and Thiede.

Because: "The multifaceted offerings, the motivating face-to-face lessons, the sharing of musical experiences and also the personal contact and making music together - all this stands for the quality of our music school. This added value, which constitutes the music school as a whole, is indispensable and must be maintained," emphasizes Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel.

The following lessons are currently offered: Instrumental and vocal lessons; introductory lessons; music theory; study preparation (SVA) and jazz choir.

For all newcomers: getting to know each other via digital media is conceivable. Those interested can contact the music school directly to arrange a trial lesson.
