The first mention of the village under the name Bettingen can be found in documents about the possessions of the Fulda monastery, which were written between 780 and 802. According to these documents, a certain Odiltag and his wife Wentelsuint transfer their estates in "Bettingen" to Fulda Monastery. Further mentions contain the spelling with a double d throughout. Overall, however, there are only a few variations, e.g. Beddige in 1018 and 1157, Beddinge from 1328 and Beddinghe around 1380. Since 1542 it has been called Beddingen throughout.
