Oak processionary moth in Hagenholz

Following last week's discovery of the first infestation of oak processionary moths this year in Hagenholz in Salzgitter-Thiede, further nests were found in Hagenholz today.

Last week, the nests discovered on two oak trees were quickly vacuumed up by a specialist company, according to the SRB. No further infestation could be detected at that time.

According to the SRB, the currently affected area is cordoned off with a construction fence and a sign. The oak processionary moth causes burns to the skin with its 0.1 mm thick stinging hairs. The SRB warns against touching the infested areas as this can lead to allergic reactions. There is currently no suitable company available to remove it. These nests will probably not be professionally removed until the beginning of next week.

The oak processionary moth is often confused with the harmless gypsy moth. There are different species of gypsy moths that can be found on various shrubs, but not on oak trees.

The contact person at the SRB is Torsten Riekewold on 05341 / 839-3409 or by e-mail torsten.riekewoldstadt.salzgitterde
