New short film series for children: 50,000 years of life in Salzgitter

In November, a new short film series - this time for children - will be released in collaboration with the Medienzentrum and the Salder Castle Municipal Museum.

At the beginning of 2021, the first series of the "Short visit - highlights at Salder Castle Municipal Museum" section was launched. With hopefully equal success, monthly episodes will now be published on the City of Salzgitter's YouTube channel and on the museum's website.

In the episodes, museum educator and archaeologist Christine Kellner-Depner brings cultural education to life in three-minute digital tours. The short films deal with the "permanent exhibitions" in the castle and stables. The films are intended to whet the appetite to visit the museum with parents or grandparents free of charge and discover and experience history up close.

For the first episode, Kellner-Depner goes to the exhibition area that deals with life in the Stone Age some 50,000 years ago. The life-size figures "Kolus" and "Urak" playfully illustrate how the Neanderthals in the Salzgitter region dressed and fed in the Ice Age climate.

Project manager and historian Jeannette Rische from the city of Salzgitter's Medienzentrum emphasizes the educational nature of the films. "Children are coming into contact with media earlier and earlier, so it was important for us to explicitly address them as a target group. They see films differently to adults. They immerse themselves in a story with all their senses. Of course, it is important to use language that is appropriate for children. Ms. Kellner-Depner has implemented this very well."

The museum educator not only arouses interest with replica tools and items of clothing from this period, but also entices visitors with original archaeological finds, such as a throwing rod from a reindeer. In addition, an original piece of an excavation site with other various animal bones is presented.

Museum director Arne Homann is delighted with the successful cooperation once again: "The teams from the media workshop and the museum have once again done a great job! I am very much looking forward to further joint projects."

Further episodes will feature articles about the lives of knights, Germanic tribes, salt boilers and monks.
