Born in Bremerhaven, he studied pre- and early history (archaeology) and history (specializing in the Middle Ages and modern times) in Hamburg. His museum career led him to the museums of the district of Gifhorn via a traineeship at the Bomann Museum in Celle and independent work as a historian and archaeologist. There he managed the Steinhorst School Museum and organized cultural events such as the "Steinhorst Summer of Reading". He was also responsible for the press and public relations work of all four museums in the district of Gifhorn.
In addition, he has a long-standing interest in old handicrafts, has learned many historical techniques himself and finds living history and the re-enactment of historical events extremely exciting, also thanks to his own experiences. He has published regionally relevant scientific studies on the Battle of Lutter am Barenberge in 1626 (battlefield archaeology) and on Duke Julius' slag balls from the 16th century (mining and economic history).
Despite his rather northern German background, Homann has close family connections to the Harz region: His family comes from Bad Harzburg on his father's side. He is still a regular guest there and in the Harz and its surrounding area. The nature of the Upper Harz and the medieval history of the region have particularly appealed to him since his earliest childhood. Salzgitter and its diverse cultural offerings are therefore very familiar to him. He currently lives with his family in Hanover.
Since taking up his post, Homann and the museum team have been working hard behind the scenes to plan and prepare for the future after the end of the pandemic. Among other things, the depots have been reorganized and modernized and sections of the permanent exhibition have been revised. Completely new, exciting exhibits have also been added. For example, the section on the mechanization of agriculture will in future feature a fully functional egg sorting machine and the restoration of the legendary Autowerke Salzgitter wagon acquired in 2017 is almost complete (only the seats are still missing).
The special exhibitions for the coming years are also already planned after a short time. This summer, assuming the coronavirus restrictions are eased accordingly, "Friends - Helpers - Street Fighters!" is to be held in cooperation with the Lower Saxony Police Academy to provide information on a topic that is highly relevant to the history of democracy: The development of the German police in the Weimar Republic from 1918 to 1933 - in transition between the German Empire and National Socialism.
In 2022, the motto will be "Give stuff!" The show, which is primarily designed for children and families, explores the question of what we actually wear on our bodies and how threads and fibers were and are produced. It will be particularly informative for everyone in 2023 with a short "Cultural history of the toilet". The exhibition was conceived by the Museum Schloss Rochlitz / Staatliche Schlösser, Burgen und Gärten Sachsen gGmbH and has already toured numerous German museums. Much is already being planned for the following years, which will be announced in the coming weeks.
