These colorful animal frescoes can be found on two apartment buildings from the 1950s in Pappelweg and Reppnersche Straße in Salzgitter-Lebenstedt. Mammoth, fur rhinoceros and wild horse can be seen.
Archaeologist Christine Kellner-Depner provides more information in the article.
Furthermore, in 1952, an archaeological find in what was then Section VI of Salzgitter-Lebenstedt caused a worldwide sensation; according to Kellner-Depner, it is one of the most important Paleolithic sites in Central Europe. The bones were found in a hunting station from where the Neanderthals went reindeer hunting in the Ice Age climate a good 50,000 years ago.
Kellner-Depner: "Science owes a great deal of knowledge to this find and the excellent archaeological work that was carried out under difficult circumstances at the time."
This work is honored in the permanent archaeological exhibition at the Salder Castle Municipal Museum, where some of the finds are on display. There is also a two-meter-high mammoth sculpture in the Eiszeitgarten and a mammoth track can also be discovered there.
