Salzgitter

Exhibition: Salder Castle Municipal Museum is still looking for exhibits

Next spring, from March 3 to July 16, 2023, a very special exhibition will be coming to Salzgitter. That's when the Salder Castle Municipal Museum will host an exhibition on the history of the toilet: "Drauf geschissen 2.0"!

An exhibit from the depots of the municipal museum: the practical pit latrine presented in the photo by museum director Arne Homann and museum educator Christine Kellner-Depner.

The crude title should not confuse you - there are all sorts of interesting, funny, disreputable and even creepy things to learn about the long past of this not always quiet little place. Because people have always needed this "one place".

However, it was only cultivated by the early civilizations. And so the show spans the millennia, from ancient Egypt to the Romans, the Middle Ages and modern times right up to the present day. There are also many delicate exhibits and much more.

The museum team has also brought historical exhibits from Salzgitter out of its own depots. For example, the practical pit latrine. Such toilets were used "underground" in mining, where the issue of using the toilet correctly and as odor-free as possible was understandably of particular importance. The museum's example comes from the Konrad shaft. And then there's the atomic toilet, for example, but that's another story...

But the exhibition is not "finished" yet! Because even the museum doesn't have everything it would like to show. Museum director Arne Homann, for example, would like to see an original old "outhouse", like the wooden ones that used to stand in many gardens. Perhaps someone has something like this to give away for free? In general, from old toilet paper to chamber pots, old or quirky items can be offered to the museum team. It should just be cleaned or unused. Museum educator Kellner-Depner adds that toilet stories are also collected and presented in the exhibition.
Anyone who knows an interesting or funny story is also welcome to send an e-mail to museumstadt.salzgitterde or call 05341 / 839-4618 and -4619. Anonymity is guaranteed on request!
