Salzgitter

Colorful city - colorful flag

On the International Day against Homophobia, the city of Salzgitter will hoist the rainbow flag at the town hall for the first time on Tuesday, May 17, representing diversity and tolerance.

At its meeting on February 22, the Salzgitter City Council decided by a large majority that the rainbow flag will be hoisted annually on May 17, the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT), in order to send a visible signal of solidarity with all lifestyles in our society.

Mayor Frank Klingebiel comments: "Salzgitter is colorful and diverse. No matter what gender, lifestyle, sexual orientation or faith - it doesn't matter. The rainbow flag stands for this diversity and is a perfect fit for our city."

Background information:

The date of the IDAHOT was chosen to commemorate May 17, 1990, when the World Health Organization (WHO) decided to remove homosexuality from its diagnostic code for diseases.
