The moated castle built there around the year 1000 is one of the oldest in the state of Braunschweig. The site of the castle lies in the lowlands at the foot of the Salzgitter hill range of Lichtenberg. It was built over many centuries from around 1200 AD.
A prison was also part of the castle. A single room in the gatehouse served as a dungeon. To the right of the gate, a barricaded window opening still draws attention to the former prison.
