"We have used our successful networking experience from the refugee crisis and set up a round table in Ukraine," says Klingebiel.
Today, the first digital exchange took place with committed players from the fields of business, social associations, schools, trade unions, aid organizations, churches, police, fire department and administration.
Everyone involved paid tribute to the enormous willingness of the population to help. Well-stocked school cellars with pre-sorted donations in kind - thanks to the active support of helping schoolchildren - are now reaching their limits. Questions of storage and transportation now need to be clarified, but it is also important to send a signal that no more donations of goods and clothing are needed for the time being.
"Signs of solidarity are extremely important and invaluable. But material aid for all Ukrainian citizens is just as important - in Ukraine, in neighboring Eastern European countries or wherever the refugees arrive.
The development of events is so dynamic that a reliable assessment of the situation is currently not possible. It is not known how many Ukrainian citizens are actually coming to Germany, nor what the actual need for relief supplies is.
However, aid will only reach its destination if it is needs-based and reaches where it is needed. And therefore the united appeal: Currently, donating money to the known donation accounts of the major aid organizations is more helpful than donations in kind."
The aid organizations can assess what is needed in neighbouring Eastern European countries, for example, which are currently caring for the largest number of refugees from Ukraine, and buy accordingly.
The first refugees from Ukraine arrived in Salzgitter yesterday and today.
