In the city centers of Salzgitter-Lebenstedt and Salzgitter-Bad, construction work has begun on the "Small Climate-Friendly Forums" funded by the European Union. As part of this project, damaged trees will be felled in both city centers, new climate-resistant trees planted, solar benches installed, drinking fountains installed and fogging technology installed to improve the microclimate.
Mayor Frank Klingebiel commented: "Our town centers in Lebenstedt and Salzgitter-Bad are hugely important to us all as meeting places, shopping areas and for leisure activities. The corona pandemic and the ever-increasing online trade make it necessary to find new ways to design the two centers of Salzgitter. These cost money - money that most municipalities do not have or only have to a limited extent. That is why, in my role as Vice President of the Association of Cities and Towns of Lower Saxony at the time in 2020 / 2021, I advocated for funding programs to cushion the serious negative consequences of the pandemic for our city centres. Our city now has the opportunity to build the "small climate-friendly forums" in Lebenstedt and Salzgitter-Bad and a toilet facility in the center of Lebenstedt thanks to the total of 1.9 million euros in funding. It is important for me to say that these measures were agreed and approved by the advertising associations and the political committees. Together, we want to make the centers of Lebenstedt and Salzgitter-Bad much more attractive places to spend time. In future, climate-resistant trees will provide inner-city greenery and invite people to relax. The forums are an important building block for breaking new ground in our city centers. But we also need to use them more broadly - as residential areas, for offices, stores and cultural events, for example. There has to be life on the streets in the truest sense of the word! That is why I am delighted that the construction work is now underway and that the forums in Lebenstedt and Salzgitter-Bad will soon be a meeting place for young and old." Finally, he adds: "The donkey in Salzgitter-Bad will also return to its usual place once the construction work is complete."
