At the moment, there is still rubble from the old buildings on the site, which fell victim to a fire a few years ago. Construction work on the new building can then begin soon. The planned ensemble in a modern half-timbered style will provide space for eight barrier-free residential units and a large medical practice. The developer is Wohnbau Salzgitter, which acquired the property.
Doctor Tanja Kehler is particularly pleased to be the tenant of the practice rooms on the new first floor. The general practitioner already runs a practice at Gittertor 4: "It's good that things can start soon. As a new tenant, it's really something special to be involved in the planning right from the start. My new premises are perfect for our wide range of services. The barrier-free, central location will also be a great relief for many of our patients."
Salzgitter's Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel, the initiator of the project and member of the Supervisory Board of Wohnbau Salzgitter, is also on site and is visibly moved: "After years of planning and the elimination of many uncertainties in a unique construction project in the heart of our wonderful old town of Salz-gitter-Bad, the new building in a modern half-timbered style is finally getting underway. For good reasons and in consultation with the Old Town Festival Committee, we waited until after our traditional Old Town Festival to start the construction work so that we could make the stage on Klesmerplatz possible. Today we are giving the go-ahead for the construction work! This project will help to revitalize the town centre of Salzgitter-Bad and optimize the supply of GPs in Salzgitter-Bad. This is a moving moment for me, as I initiated this project immediately after the devastating fire in April 2019 with the then Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Wohnbau Salzgitter, Rolf Stratmann. Otherwise, the ruins of the fire would still be standing in the heart of our old town today. I would like to thank everyone involved in the realization, especially the former owners and neighbors."
Christian Striese also attended the site visit. He is the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Wohnbau Salzgitter: "The new building enables urban living in beautiful surroundings in the middle of the shopping area of our old town here in Bad. This is also in line with the concepts for the realignment of German city centers. They should develop into a mix of living, working, shopping and leisure."
Jens Bischoff, Managing Director of Wohnbau Salzgitter, adds: "The planning phase for this major construction project was particularly complex. The major challenges have all been mastered well so far in partnership with the city administration, so it is a particularly good feeling to have found the best solution for the site. This excavator today marks the start of something new that was destroyed by fire around four years ago."
The final start of construction work is scheduled for mid-August. If everything goes according to plan, the practice rooms and apartments can be handed over in the first quarter of 2025.
