Since the end of 2021, the city of Salzgitter has been offering the citizens of Salzgitter-Thiede and Salzgitter-Bad transport options with flexo minibuses in addition to the existing regular bus service. The project, which is managed by the Braunschweig Regional Association, had to overcome considerable teething problems. Since June 2023, however, customers have been able to book the minibuses via app. Mayor Klingebiel is therefore hoping that the service will now be increasingly accepted by customers and has therefore proposed to the Salzgitter City Council that the project be extended for a further year on a trial basis until 31.12.2024.

The Lord Mayor explains: "As Lord Mayor, I am fundamentally convinced by this service, as it supplements ÖPNV with spontaneous connections, especially in the mornings and evenings. In addition, the Flexo minibuses in the south of our city connect our Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences in Salzgitter-Calbecht very well to Salzgitter-Bad with its shopping and leisure facilities. However, it must be clearly stated that the Flexo minibuses cause considerable acquisition and operating costs, to which the city of Salzgitter must also make a not inconsiderable contribution of its own. The number of users to date has fallen far short of expectations. Only if our citizens use this service significantly more intensively than before during the project extension until 31.12.2024 can the long-term operation of the Flexo minibuses be ensured. Otherwise, this interesting flexo transport service could be discontinued at the beginning of 2025."
