End-of-year presents at Salzgitter Town Hall: The State Commissioner for Regional Development, Dr. Ulrike Witt, handed over four funding decisions for a total of 26.6 million euros to Mayor Frank Klingebiel. The money will be used to build two schools and two daycare centers that are urgently needed in Salzgitter.
A total of around 3.19 million euros was approved for the construction of a three-group daycare center in Salzgitter-Bad. The daycare center will be built close to the new all-day elementary school Wiesenstraße with four classes. The construction work required for the school will be funded with around 12.24 million euros.
In Salzgitter-Lichtenberg, the construction of a new daycare center and an elementary school is also being funded by the structural aid of the state of Lower Saxony. The construction project for the planned four-group daycare center "Am Zingel" will receive funding of around 4.07 million euros, while the construction of the two-form entry elementary school with a canteen will be supported with 7.10 million euros.
The State Commissioner for Regional Development, Dr. Ulrike Witt: "As part of Salzgitter's structural aid, the state is providing the city with 26.6 million euros in funding for education and social integration. It is money well spent. It is being invested where social integration can be achieved at an early stage: with children in kindergarten and in schools, i.e. in places where children come together and learn with and from each other."
Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel adds: "The new school and daycare center buildings in Salzgitter-Bad and Salzgitter-Lichtenberg are urgently needed due to the rapid and enormous increase in the number of children and are costing the city budget a total of around 45 million euros. The fact that the state is sustainably co-financing these construction projects is a very good signal for which I am very grateful. Up-to-date daycare facilities and well-positioned schools for all children in Salzgitter - regardless of their background - is something that has been close to my heart since I took office. I am convinced that every investment in early education and social integration is a crucial investment in the future of our city. I am pleased and proud that I was able to convince the state government and the state parliament of the need, necessity and co-financing responsibility of the state for these four important new buildings after intensive discussions with the help of the locally responsible members of the state parliament in 2019. Sustainable and long-term financial support from the state and federal government for this important task for society as a whole is essential if cities and municipalities are to be able to master this task at all and thus ensure social peace in their local community."
Background:
In 2019, the state of Lower Saxony launched a special structural aid program for Salzgitter with a total of 50 million euros on the initiative of Mayor Frank Klingebiel, which was strongly supported by members of the state parliament Stefan Klein, Marcus Bosse, Dirk Toepffer and Christophe Plett, in order to help the city of Salzgitter master the necessary and complex structural change. The structural aid is divided into three areas: 'Education and social integration', 'Urban development needs' and 'Economic structural change'.
