As every year, five backpacks were filled with ten current picture books as part of the event. The backpacks went on a journey to 13 different daycare centers in Salzgitter between October 2022 and March 2023.
Traditionally, a wide variety of picture books were read to the children there for four weeks at a time in order to decide which book would make it onto the shortlist for the "Salzgitter Picture Book 2022".

Only one of the books made the cut, and this year's winner is the globally popular picture book "The Bad Core" by author Jory John and illustrator Pete Oswald, published by adrian Verlag, 2021.

Once again, the Rucksack Library did not stop at reading aloud. The children were once again involved in a creative discussion about the books read to them, whether by painting or making things.

"Our project is intended to encourage dialogic reading and promote language comprehension, vocabulary and fluency. The focus of this method is not on reading aloud, but on interacting with the children. The book serves as an impulse for conversation, which is why the selection of books is based on the interests and needs of children," explains Barbara Henning, deputy director of the city library.

The resulting works of art can be viewed in a small exhibition at the Lebenstedt City Library during opening hours until the end of May 2023.
