No decision yet on traffic calming in Ohlendorf

Parliament follows the recommendation of the Petitions Committee and calls for a new review by the Ministry

The residents of Ohlendorf have been calling for a permanent 30 km/h zone for Konrad-Waßmus-Straße for some time. This busy thoroughfare is a state road and the state, not the city, is responsible for traffic regulations.

In April, residents submitted a list of signatures to Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel, who promised his support and called in the state parliament's petitions committee.

The committee asked the Ministry of Transport for an expert opinion. The Ministry came to the conclusion that there was neither a compelling need nor a special danger situation in Salzgitter-Ohlendorf. There was therefore no reason for traffic restrictions on the L 512.

An assessment that the Petitions Committee does not share.

Klingebiel explains why no decision is nevertheless good news for the time being: "The Petitions Committee was not convinced by the Ministry of Transport's statement!

For this reason, there was no decision yet, but a recommendation to the state parliament to instruct the Ministry to re-examine the situation."

Parliament followed this recommendation.

Even though the final decision is still pending, this is a positive signal for the time being.

"It is at least possible that the Ministry of Transport, which has six months to reassess the situation, will decide in our favor after all," said Klingebiel.

Due to the renovation of the B248 federal road between Salzgitter-Bad and Lobmachtersen, a 30 km/h speed limit is already in force on Konsul-Waßmus-Straße. This road construction measure is expected to be delayed until the end of January 2024.

The speed limit, which the residents of Ohlendorf would like to see permanently, will therefore remain in place for the time being.
