Salzgitter

The year 2023 in Salzgitter

Salzgitter once again had a number of outstanding events in 2023.

From the end of 2022 to February 2023, the Salder Castle Municipal Museum hosted the special exhibition "A piece of heaven? Silesian cuisine in Salzgitter" was on display. The exhibition was visited by several thousand guests, who learned about how "the Silesians" once came to Salzgitter and what influence they had on the young town as well as local eating habits.

In the city centers of Salzgitter-Lebenstedt and Salzgitter-Bad, construction work for the "Small Climate-Friendly Forums" began in February and was completed in June. As part of this project, damaged trees were felled in both city centers, new climate-resistant trees were planted, solar benches were installed, drinking fountains were installed and fogging technology was installed to improve the microclimate.

The bicycle parking facility between the town hall and the municipal library in Salzgitter-Lebenstedt was ready for use in March. The facility is an open steel construction with a green roof, which offers space for around 70 bicycles.

The toilet facility in Chemnitzer Straße was opened for use in August. It is designed as a two-room facility and has a unisex disabled toilet with changing table and a unisex toilet.

Both areas have an automatic self-cleaning system. The facility is available free of charge from 06:00 to 22:00.

The highly controversial storage of nuclear waste in Schacht Konrad, which has been pushed by the federal government, was a topic throughout 2023. "According to the current state of science and technology, Schacht Konrad would be ruled out as a storage site for nuclear waste," emphasize the region's stakeholders. Nevertheless, the state and federal governments in Hanover and Berlin want the old iron ore mine to be expanded into a nuclear waste repository to the detriment of the entire region and billions of euros to be spent on it.

Shortly before the end of 2023, Wasserstoff Campus Salzgitter e.V. announced the founding of the association with the signing of its articles of association. This stands for the research and development of sustainable hydrogen technologies along the entire value chain. The founding of Wasserstoff Campus Salzgitter e.V. marks another important step in the cooperation between the partners to establish a hydrogen economy.

The traditional Adventstreff at the Salder Castle Municipal Museum was once again a wonderful experience for several thousand guests from near and far on the third weekend of Advent.
