The reason for this is the start of construction work to replace the three bridge structures on the north side of Industriestraße Mitte over six tracks of Verkehrsbetriebe Peine-Salzgitter GmbH (VPS) and a gas pipeline.
The construction work has begun with the demolition of the three bridge structures and is expected to last until the end of October 2026.
Torsten Fleige-Lütgering, Head of Civil Engineering and Transport, explains: "A special feature of the demolition of the two bridges over the VPS tracks was that it could only take place when there was no rail traffic. For safety reasons, this is only possible once a year during breaks in operations (known as a track possession break)."
On May 1 and 2, 2024, the middle bridge over two tracks of the VPS was demolished. The second bridge over four tracks will be demolished during the next closure break on May 1, 2025. The demolition of the third bridge over the gas pipeline is planned for 2024, but has not yet been scheduled.
City planning officer Michael Tacke explains the costs of the measure: "The costs for this construction measure amount to around 9.4 million euros. The measure is being funded with around 60 percent from the Municipal Transport Financing Act (GVFG)." The bridge structure on the south side was built in 1972, around 20 years later than the structures on the north side. This is intact and does not need to be renewed.
In conclusion, Tacke adds: "We ask all road users for their understanding for any inconvenience caused by the construction work."
Detour:
Road traffic
Traffic heading towards Lebenstedt will be diverted from Industriestraße Mitte (K 30) at the Watenstedt exit onto the K20 (Heerter Straße). From there, head west on Diebestieg. At the junction with Nord-Süd-Straße (K12), traffic will be diverted back northwards onto Industriestraße.
Due to the narrow lane width of the K20, it will become a one-way street heading south for the duration of the construction work. The space that is freed up will be made available to pedestrians and cyclists.
Traffic from Lebenstedt to Watenstedt will be reduced to one lane via the south side of the bridges on Industriestraße Mitte. Bus traffic will also use the detour route.
Cycling
Cyclists can continue to use the ramps on the east and west sides of the construction site. Crossing the construction road will take place with a demand traffic light and continue on the northern lane of the southern structures.
