Lord Mayor Frank Klingebiel introduces the event: "In the municipalities, the issues of "safety" and "cleanliness" are becoming increasingly important in the lives of citizens. We tackled these important issues back in 2007 with the pioneering project "Salzgitter - safe and clean" and were able to change many things. Current social developments and challenges now demand a consistent continuation, expansion and intensification of the measures introduced at that time. This is particularly true in view of the fact that social developments can be observed throughout Germany, and therefore also in Salzgitter, that challenge cohesion and orderly coexistence in cities. These include growing recklessness, a growing lack of respect and increasing ignorance of rules. "Salzgitter - safe and clean 2.0" aims to counteract these negative trends with determination. It aims to raise public awareness of the fact that compliance with standards and respect for public spaces is not only an individual obligation, but also an essential contribution to the common good and to protecting the quality of life of all citizens.
The concept, which is being implemented in close cooperation with the Salzgitter / Peine / Wolfenbüttel police department, focuses on sensitizing citizens to the issues of safety and cleanliness as part of a planned advertising campaign. Everyone can play a part in everyday things such as respectful coexistence, waste separation and waste disposal.
In addition to this preventative measure, the aim of "Salzgitter - safe and clean 2.0" is to increase the visibility of municipal and police law enforcement officers in public and, in particular, in places where there has been an increase in violations in the past. In future, any breaches of municipal statutes or laws that are detected are to be punished consistently and, in the event of an offense, with significantly higher fines. This applies, for example, to incorrect waste separation, illegal waste dumping or breaches of the hazard prevention ordinance.
In the area of cleanliness, the municipal management company will launch an intensified cleaning offensive. To this end, two additional cleaning teams (North and South) will be deployed in future to remove illegal waste deposits, empty litter bins and clean city centers. More advisory services will also be offered in future.
The concept lists numerous other measures that are to be gradually implemented over the coming months. To this end, reorganizations will also be carried out within the city administration in order to create synergy effects between operational planning, increased controls, the bundling of incoming reports and the subsequent fine and legal proceedings.
Mayor Klingebiel concludes: "We - the entire urban community - have it in our hands to make our city cleaner and safer. This starts with issues such as waste disposal and treating each other and my colleagues in the city administration with respect. Together we can achieve a lot."
