The information on the plaque was created by pupils of the IGS in collaboration with Dr. Rainer Bendick, education officer of the German War Graves Commission (Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e.V.).
At the inauguration ceremony, First Mayor Stefan Klein emphasized: "Only those who know history can learn from it. I would therefore like to thank Mr. Gatzen, all the pupils involved and Dr. Rainer Bendick. This is an important building block for the culture of remembrance in our city."
Hans Jürgen Gatzen, Head of Secondary Level II at IGS-Salzgitter, added: "This project gives us the opportunity to fill the school subject of history with life." Sascha Wolff, a Year 12 pupil at the IGS, agreed: "It was an exciting project in which we dealt with completely new topics. It brought history to life for us."
Walter-Johannes Herrmann, Honorary Chairman of the Braunschweig District Association of the German War Graves Commission, was also on site. In his speech, he made it clear: "War only ever brings suffering, death and destruction. That's why the topic is so important in schools."
This is already the fourth history and memorial plaque that has been erected as part of the cooperation between IGS Salzgitter and the Volksbund. Two plaques are located at the old Lebenstedt cemetery and one at the war memorial in Barum. IGS Salzgitter has firmly integrated the "History and Remembrance Plaque" project into its internal school curriculum: It is part of the seminar subject in year 12 of the social science profile.
