At the same time as school registration, the German language skills of children who do not have a kindergarten place in the last year before starting school are assessed. These children with little or no knowledge of German must take part in language support courses in the year before they start school. The "Fit in Deutsch" language support program is mandatory under the Lower Saxony School Act.
At the start of the 2026/2027 school year, all children who turn 6 by 30.09.2026 will start school, including children who turn 6 on 01.10.2026 and all children who were previously deferred from attending school. Children of school age must be registered by their legal guardians at the school management of the elementary school responsible for their place of residence by presenting their birth certificate. Parents are requested to bring their children with them to enrollment.
Children who reach the age of 6 after 30.09.2026 can be admitted to school at the request of their legal guardians if they are mentally and physically fit to attend school and are sufficiently developed in their social behavior. The head teachers decide at their own discretion whether the application of the legal guardians can be granted. Children admitted early are required to attend school upon admission.
For children who reach the age of six between 01.07.2026 and 30.09.2026, legal guardians can postpone school attendance by one year by submitting a written declaration to the elementary school responsible for them until 01.05.20256 (school enrolment then only on 01.08.2027).
