Time restriction for water withdrawal

Due to the current situation, the Lower Water Authority of the city of Salzgitter has announced that the withdrawal of water from surface waters in the city area is prohibited daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at temperatures above 20 degrees Celsius.

Due to the current situation, the Lower Water Authority of the city of Salzgitter has announced that the withdrawal of water from surface waters in the city area is prohibited daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at temperatures above 20 degrees Celsius.

The ban applies from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at temperatures above 20 degrees:

  • Water abstraction from wells,
  • water abstraction from surface waters and for
  • Water withdrawals for which a valid permit under water law exists.

For the sprinkling and irrigation of:

  • Agricultural and forestry areas
  • public and private green spaces such as parks and gardens
  • and sports facilities such as soccer pitches and golf courses

The time restriction is intended to prevent a deterioration in water quality in water bodies as a result of water abstraction and thus ensure that water is used sparingly.

Explanation:

In late spring and in the summer months, a large proportion of rainy water evaporates, especially during the day. The proportion of evaporation is not constant throughout the day; the proportion in the period from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. is much higher from a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius. The rising temperatures and the resulting higher evaporation lead to reduced water flow in water bodies even without abstraction. Surface waters are fed by groundwater or surface runoff.

One of the aims is to ensure a good quantitative status of groundwater and surface waters during the dry weather conditions in the summer months. Irrigation during the evaporation-rich period does not provide a proportionate benefit from the use of water bodies. On the contrary, the quantity of groundwater and surface water is strongly influenced without any effective benefit. Increased precipitation in phases also has a delayed effect on the water cycle.
