Local mayor Annegrit Grabb was delighted with the expansion of the information on offer: "Our nature trail is full of information about the trees of past years and also serves as a place to relax in nature. I am delighted with every new information sign."
The information sign was erected by the municipal management company (SRB). In 2008, a small arboretum (collection of trees) was created in the park area between Platanenweg and Gustedter Straße in Salzgitter-Gebhardshagen. All the native tree species that have been voted Tree of the Year since 1989 have been planted here. Information boards provide information about the respective characteristics of the trees. Every year a new tree is added in accordance with the "Tree of the Year" selection.
To the trembling poplar:
The quaking aspen, also known as aspen, is a native deciduous tree from the willow family. The species grows up to 25 meters high and has a loose crown. The round leaves with long stems are typical. It is one of the most important food plants for insects in Central Europe. The quaking aspen has low soil requirements and is easy to care for. It is therefore often referred to as a pioneer tree species in climate change. Incidentally, the expression "shaking like aspen leaves" comes from the aspen, as the leaf stalks make an audible noise when they move in the wind.
