The reason for this is the worldwide "Earth Hour". All citizens are called upon to do without light at home and in this way set an example for climate protection. This year's motto is: "We're turning it off!"
Thousands of cities will be shrouding their most famous buildings in darkness. Many citizens will switch off the lights at home.
Active participants in Salzgitter this year include
- WEVG GmbH & Co. KG with its administrative buildings in Lebenstedt and the customer center in Salzgitter-Bad
- Wirtschafts- und Innovationsförderung GmbH (WIS)
- Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH
- The city administration switches off part of the city center lighting (pedestrian zone) in Lebenstedt and the lighting of the monument for one hour.
- the municipal museum in Salder
- The City of Salzgitter's own facility management, purchasing and logistics company (dispenses with all non-safety-relevant lighting)
"Every year since 2016, the city of Salzgitter has taken part in Earth Hour, during which private individuals and companies are called upon to switch off unnecessary outdoor lighting. In the meantime, due to a positive change in awareness of the climate and energy saving, it has become widely accepted that many companies or institutions leave their outdoor lighting switched off all year round, except for safety-relevant areas," says Michael Tacke, City Councillor for Building, Urban Planning, Transport and the Environment.
The city of Salzgitter invites everyone to join in. "Earth Hour is a simple way for everyone to set an example and do something to protect the planet," says City Councillor Michael Tacke. In the private sphere, for example, this includes switching off the television.
