After just over two years of construction, the new primary school building for around 400 pupils has now been completed. The demolition of the old building, the construction of the new gymnasium and the design of the campus-like outdoor area are still to follow.

Mayor Frank Klingebiel was delighted: "Today is a great day for the staff at the elementary school, for Salzgitter-Bad and for our entire city. It is also a moving day: moving for me personally, because I myself was once a primary school pupil in the old school building. But it is moving for all of us because we have achieved a real feat of strength thanks to the state funding for which I and our members of the state parliament fought for a long time: The new elementary school is a real tour de force, contemporary, bright and functional. A perfect place to learn and spend time, offering the best conditions for a successful start to school. I would like to thank everyone involved who worked so hard to make this project a reality." Local mayor Andreas Triebe added: "All the plans have now been realized. A complete success and a good investment for the future."

The costs for the construction of the elementary school and the gymnasium together amount to around 28.3 million euros. The state of Lower Saxony has supported this project with around 12.3 million euros via the Salzgitter structural aid fund. Astrid Paus, Head of Department at the Braunschweig Regional Development Office, emphasized: "I am delighted that we are able to open the new primary school building today. It has become a great place to feel good and learn. Every euro of state funding here is well invested in the education of our children, because elementary school are an important building block for lifelong learning."

It was a particularly moving occasion for principal Bettina Buttke. She said: "I only believed in today's opening date when I had the key to the school in my hand. Thankfully, we were able to have a say in many of the decisions regarding the school equipment. We experienced the construction at first hand. Contemporary, modern learning is now possible here, which fits in with our educational work. Many thanks to everyone involved in the new building."

Michael Letter, Chairman of the Salzgitter City Council, echoed the thanks: "I would like to thank the commitment of our Lord Mayor who, together with our members of the state parliament, raised the funding and, together with City Planning Officer Michael Tacke and his team, realized the new building."

The elementary school is a three-storey, rectangular building in modular timber construction measuring approximately 64 meters x 23 meters. The first floor houses a canteen, childcare rooms and a library. The classrooms and sanitary facilities are located on the upper floors. Underfloor heating is installed in all rooms. A decentralized ventilation system is installed in the classrooms. The exterior façades were designed with a uniform natural larch wood façade, which will naturally darken and turn grey over time. Heat is supplied by an electrically operated air/water heat pump on the roof. There are also photovoltaic modules that generate electricity for the building's own use. A green roof was planned for the remaining areas.

Note:

In accordance with the decision of the Salzgitter City Council on 15.04.2026 based on an application by the school, the elementary school Altstadtschule at the Wiesenstraße site will be renamed "Grundschule Am Salze" from 01.08.2026.
