Film about the Hanau attack: Fate of those affected touched

The Integration Team of the city's Department for Social Planning and Integration, in cooperation with the city of Salzgitter's Bildungsbüro, invited the 9th grade of IGS Salzgitter to the Kultiplex cinema in Lebenstedt.

The occasion was the International Weeks and the International Day against Racism. The film "Das deutsche Volk" was shown. It deals with the attack in Hanau, which is one of the most serious acts of racially motivated violence in Germany.

The attack: On the evening of February 19, 2020, 43-year-old Tobias R. shot nine men and women at several crime scenes in Hanau within six minutes for racist motives. The perpetrator entered various bars and kiosks one after the other to murder people there and killed a man who tried to stop him with his car. Six other people were injured - some of them seriously - in the attack, which took place between 9.55 p.m. and 10.01 p.m.

The film is told from the perspective of the relatives and survivors. Teachers and pupils agreed: "The film was very moving. It is important to continue working on the topic of racism." Individual young people later said: "The film showed how difficult it is for those affected"; "You could feel the pain of the parents"; "It was exciting to see what this does to people"; "The film dealt with a very important event and you got a lot of information about the crime."

The personal perspective enabled the young viewers to gain emotional access to the topic in order to develop an understanding of the consequences of racism and violence. Many of them gained a new perspective on how important empathy, education and commitment are for respectful coexistence.
