Salzgitter

Launch of the "Fuhs River Floodplain Renaturation" Project

The city of Salzgitter has announced that the construction project “Renaturation of the Fuhse Floodplain with the Installation of Floodplain-Typical Elements” is set to begin soon. The construction work will cover a stretch of approximately one kilometer between Theodor-Heuss-Straße and Highway 39 in Lebenstedt.

The Fuhse River between Theodor-Heuss-Straße and Highway 39 is being restored to its natural state.

The construction project will restore the waterbody and its floodplain to a near-natural state (renaturation). This will improve the condition of the waterbody while also promoting biodiversity. In addition, recreational areas will be created to provide opportunities for nature-based recreation in the open countryside and to facilitate access to the water.

The project is funded by the State of Lower Saxony and the EU. This funding supports projects that constitute a charitable and/or public-interest investment aimed at improving environmental protection and water conservation. The client is the Environmental Department of the City of Salzgitter.

Access to the construction site is from Bruchmachtersen via Söhlekamp/K 9 (the path marked "red").

Road Closures and Detours Due to Construction Work

Construction is scheduled to begin in calendar weeks 38 through 39, i.e., in mid-September 2026. The project is expected to last until May 2027.

Access to the construction site will be from Bruchmachtersen via Söhlekamp/K 9.

Residents along Söhlekamp who are affected will be notified in writing via a resident information notice.

As part of the renaturation project, the agricultural access road on the right side of the Fuhse River—which also serves as a bike path—will be relocated to the edge of the floodplain.

This path is currently closed due to construction work on the central wastewater collector being carried out by ASG Abwasserentsorgung Salzgitter GmbH. Even during the renaturation work, which is expected to take place at the same time, the path cannot be used by cyclists for safety reasons and will therefore remain completely closed.

A detour route is signposted (see map).

During the construction period, traffic from the construction site may cause disruptions in the area leading into Bruchmachtersen. The City of Salzgitter asks all residents for their understanding.

The project is funded by the European Union and the state of Lower Saxony.
