In particular, the law provides for the abolition of the child passport. From January 1, 2024, it will no longer be possible to apply for a child's passport. Instead of the children's passport, a "normal" passport, also known as an ePassport, can be applied for. The fee is EUR 37.50 (EUR 70 from the age of 24). This passport is a machine-readable ID document with additional electronic security features that can be used for worldwide travel.
Children's passports issued before the end of 2023 remain valid.
Renewals/updates of documents already issued will no longer be possible from 01.01.2024. Parents who wish to travel abroad with their children will then need a passport or ID card.
Passports and ID cards for people under the age of 24 are valid for a maximum of 6 years.
The BürgerCenter recommends checking the validity of identity documents - not only those of children - in good time before traveling abroad. The documents should already be checked when booking the vacation.
